October 2024 Reads

Another slow month…but some good reads

October was a better month for me than September, but it was still pretty slow reading-wise. All three books I finished this month were in audiobook form, but all were quite enjoyable.

I’m currently reading Jason Rekulak’s new book, The Last One at the Wedding, which is really good—I’m only 1/4th of the way into it! I’m also reading The Book of Witching by C.J. Cooke, and it’s been a bit tough to get into, but I’m hoping it will improve. I am about to start Society of Lies by Lauren Ling Brown on audio, and it looks quite promising.

The Cemetary of Untold Stories by Julia Alvarez ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a masterfully woven tale by Julia Alvarez and expertly narrated. The main character in the story, Alma, decides to leave her prosperous life as a writer in the US and return to her native Dominican Republic to a piece of land she inherited upon her father’s death. She decides to build a cemetery to bury her “untold stories” or manuscript drafts she never finished. While she initially does this for her own peace and mental health, the stories once buried refuse to die and take on a life of their own.
